Japan's elaborate Manhole Covers

Did you know there is an art under your feet, literally.

During my recent stay in Japan I started collecting photographs of japanese manholes. They are everywhere, you just need to pay attention! Each municipality takes pride in its manhole cover design, which can display anything from municipal symbols and local landscapes to abstract patterns or illustrations of local legends. There’s even a Japan Society of Manhole Covers… crazy! Japanese manhole covers aren't everyone's idea of typical Japanese art, but they're certainly worth discovering. Creative and unique sewer covers can be found in most of Japan's 809 cities and 47 prefectures, drawing "manholers" to each corner of the country to see them.

Below are a few of my personal finds, I photoshopped them onto a black background and hang them around my house, they look beautiful:
