Miyajima Island outside the city of Hiroshima
Itsukushima (厳島) is an island in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as Miyajima Island and only a short trip away by ferry.
It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The island is closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine. The centuries-old shrine is the source of both the island's fame and its name. While I was in Horishima, I took an afternoon to visit it recently.
