Afternoon in Hiroshima, Japan

Afternoon in Hiroshima, Japan

There is a lot of history in Hiroshima, Japan. The first two atomic bombs ever used were dropped on Japan in early August, 1945, directly killing an estimated 70,000 people. Hiroshima was rebuilt after the war. In 1949, a design was selected for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, the closest surviving building to the location of the bomb's detonation, was designated the Genbaku Dome or "Atomic Dome", a part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was opened in 1955 in the Peace Park.

I spent a full day in Hiroshima today, visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and of course the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum which had a huge impact on me. The Peace Memorial Museum displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of that event, supplemented by exhibits that describe Hiroshima before and after the bombings and others that present the current status of the nuclear age. Each of the items displayed embodies the grief, anger, or pain of real people. It was difficult to see everything in person…
